Baking, family style

Image
Sunday afternoon, during our family Zoom session, Barbara mentioned that she and Aunt Sadie would get together soon to begin baking traditional pizza rustica and Easter dolls. Everybody had something to say about his or her own family traditions. One of the highlights of our discussion, though, was Roseanne (LaCosta) Losinsky's mother Eleanor's recipe for ricotta pie. First, she showed us a copy beautifully, poignantly inscibed on a cutting board...a  gift from her late husband.  It sounded much like our pizza rustica but with more ricotta...a lot more.  I asked her to send it, so that I could post it here on the family blog. That made me remember talking to Diana Lynn (Fidelle) Boyle about the ricotta pie she makes for Easter, a recipe from Rocci.  And we got to talking about all the seasonal recipes we still make each year.   So I thought I would just gather up some family recipes to share with you all, including my sister-in-law's recipes for Cheareg, a ...

Two photographs: a view into the past

Image
Good morning, family.  I was about to write this on my Rachel's House blog,, when it occurred to me that you might enjoy seeing it here. Chapel Hill 7:00am, Saturday, 31 degrees It's a rainy February morning, cold too, so I'm propped in bed reading and jotting my to-do list for today, every now and then glancing out the window at the birds who skitter between the feeder on my neighbor's high window and the brass tray outside in my low garden.           What catches my eye just now, though, is inside, on the wall slightly to right of my usual view...Elizabeth Matheson's photograph of a back porch behind the old Colonial Inn in Hillsborough.  She'd put it up on Instagram after she took it early one morning...probably about the same early hour I am looking at it now.  The minute I saw it, I wanted it for my own.    It reminds me,  I wrote her,  of my grandmother's and great-aunts' dresses. Elizabeth, whose work I admir...

Sister Mary Grace (Donna) Cozzoli

Image
Sister Mary Grace (Donna) Cozzoli Sister Mary Grace (Donna) Cozzoli was called home by our Lord into His eternal peace on January 24, 2021.  Born on January 19, 1955, in North Plainfield, New Jersey, she was the youngest daughter of Joseph and Martha Cozzoli. Sister Mary Grace was the woman her name personified in many ways. A caring sister, a loving child to her parents, a dedicated servant of her faith, she exemplified a life of service and love. She entered the congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George in 1989.  In her early years in the congregation, she worked in pastoral care and day care, then for retired priests in New Jersey and Nebraska. Eventually, after her work in the household of the Archbishop of St. Louis, she was transferred to the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C., where she accepted the office of Sister-In-Charge. During her six years there, she was privileged to host Pope Francis when he visited and stayed at the residence. ...
